Clara did not answer immediately.
“Explain it to me.”
Her lawyer, Isabel, opened the electronic file.
Rivas Digital had been trying for months to raise eight million euros.
Montalbán Patrimonio was supposed to become the main investor.
But a few weeks earlier, Álvaro had added a series of additional guarantees.
Among them were assets connected to a real estate company.
The problem?
That company belonged to Clara.
Not to the couple.
To her alone.
“How could he have done this?”
“He shouldn’t have been able to.”
Isabel continued.
A power of attorney had been attached.
A digital signature.
A copy of an identity document.
An authorization.
Everything appeared to have come from Clara.
But Clara had never signed anything.
She felt her anger replacing the shock.
“Block everything.”
“Already done.”
Then Isabel added:
“And I strongly advise you not to go back to the Rivas family home alone.”
The next morning, Álvaro called.
Then again.
Then twenty more times.
At 9:12 a.m., the financing was officially suspended.
At 9:20, his father called Clara.
“You can’t destroy a family business over a marital disagreement.”
Clara remained calm.
“This is no longer a marital disagreement.”
“Don’t exaggerate.”
“Your son used my assets as collateral without my consent.”
Silence.
Then Mercedes took the phone.
“After everything we’ve done for you!”
Clara thought about the washbasin.
The slap.
Her white dress.
Then she replied:
“That’s exactly what you did to me that opened my eyes.”
The internal investigation began.
The metadata showed that the power of attorney had been created from Álvaro’s work computer.
But someone else had also accessed the file.
His older brother.
Then the red folder appeared.
It was found in the trunk of Álvaro’s car.
Inside:
printed versions of several guarantees.
Financial projections.
And a handwritten note.
“After the wedding, Clara won’t be able to back out.”
That sentence erased any remaining doubt.
For the Rivas family, the wedding wasn’t simply a union.
It was supposed to become a lock.
They believed that once Clara was married, she would hesitate to cause a scandal.
That she would give in.
That she would protect her husband.
They were wrong.
Clara filed a complaint over the fraudulent use of her documents.
Then she immediately began the proceedings to end the marriage.
Rivas Digital did not collapse overnight.
But without the eight million, the company had to completely rethink its plans.
Some partners walked away.
Others demanded explanations.
Álvaro lost far more than financing.
He lost trust.
A few weeks later, Clara returned to collect the rest of her belongings.
Mercedes was standing in the entrance hall.
She no longer said anything about a woman’s place.
Clara walked past her.
In the bedroom, the washbasin was still there.
Empty.
She stared at it for a few seconds.
Then smiled.
Because that night, Mercedes had wanted to teach her what her place in the family would be.
