The man’s name was Élias Morel.
Twelve years earlier, his brother Thomas had disappeared along with five members of a team assigned to study the wildlife in that region.
The search teams had found no vehicles, no bodies, and no equipment.
Only a report claiming they had most likely been swept away by an avalanche.
Élias had never believed it.
He picked up the piece of fabric left behind by the large wolf.
The emblem sewn onto it truly belonged to Thomas’s unit.
Before he could think any further, the leader of the pack turned around and disappeared between the trees.
The other wolves followed him.
Only the small cub remained beside Élias.
— You want me to follow you, don’t you? he whispered.
He placed the wolf cub beneath his jacket and moved after them.
The pack always kept a few meters of distance.
After twenty minutes, they stopped in front of an old forest cabin that had officially been abandoned for decades.
A faint light shone from beneath the floorboards.
Élias heard voices.
He approached a cracked window.
Inside, three men were moving cages and metal crates.
On one of them was the same symbol that appeared on the wolf cub’s collar.
He then understood that the little wolf was not wild.
Someone had equipped it to track the movements of the pack.
Élias stepped back and called for help.
But a branch snapped beneath his boot.
The men immediately rushed outside.
— Who’s there?
The pack scattered into the trees.
Élias tried to run, but one of the strangers spotted him.
— Get him!
The wolf leader suddenly appeared in front of them.
It did not attack.
It simply blocked their path while growling.
The men hesitated long enough for Élias to run toward an old underground shelter hidden behind the cabin.
The door was locked.
Yet the wolf cub’s pendant fit perfectly into a small, rusted lock.
Inside, Élias discovered tracking devices, poaching weapons, and several bags containing the personal belongings of the missing research team.
Then he found a camera protected inside a waterproof box.
The final video showed Thomas uncovering a network that was capturing wolves to sell them to private facilities.
The team members had wanted to alert the authorities.
One of the reserve’s officials had betrayed them.
The video ended with Thomas hiding the evidence inside the shelter before being chased.
The police arrived shortly afterward and arrested the men from the cabin.
Thanks to the footage, they also found the former reserve official and located a collapsed tunnel where the researchers had been trapped.
Thomas had not survived.

The great wolf appeared between the trees.
