Daniel’s voice crackled through the silence.
— If someone is listening to this, it means I didn’t manage to get out of the reserve.
His daughter, Anna, covered her mouth with one hand.
Commander Marc Delcourt turned up the volume.
— For three weeks, I have been watching vehicles entering the reserve at night through the northern trail. They are carrying tusks, hides, and crates labeled as veterinary supplies.
Several guards exchanged glances.
That trail had officially been closed for months.
Daniel continued:
— Someone on our team is opening the gates for them. I recorded the vehicle numbers and hid the footage in my camera.
The commander looked at the mud-covered device.
Then he turned toward the men standing there.
— No one leaves the courtyard.
A guard named Victor stepped back discreetly.
The lion immediately turned its head toward him.
A deep growl echoed through the air.
Victor froze.
— Why is that animal looking at me like that? he asked.
Anna then noticed a tear in his sleeve.
The fabric matched exactly the piece of cloth caught on a branch near the place where her father’s body had been found.
— You were with him that night, she whispered.
Victor shook his head.
— That’s ridiculous.
Marc removed the memory card from the camera and inserted it into a laptop.
The first video showed several trucks entering the reserve.
The second revealed men loading crates filled with tusks.
Then Victor appeared.
He was opening the gate himself.
The final recording was shaky.
Daniel was running through the forest.
A voice shouted at him to stop.
Then a gunshot rang out.
The camera fell to the ground.
In the reflection of a puddle, Victor could be seen approaching.
— You should have looked the other way, Daniel, he said.
Victor tried to run.
Two guards stopped him before he could reach the trees.
— I didn’t want to kill him! he shouted. He refused to give me the camera!
Marc stared at him with disgust.
— So you staged his death as an accident.
Victor lowered his head.
He confessed that a trafficking network had been paying several employees to let the vehicles pass.
Daniel had uncovered the truth and was preparing a case for the authorities.
That night, Victor had chased him to the ravine.
Daniel had tried to protect the camera before being struck and pushed.
The lion had most likely witnessed what happened.
It had found the glove, then kept the bag hidden in the forest.
When the funeral began, the voices and familiar scent of Daniel had drawn it toward the courtyard.
Thanks to the recordings, several members of the network were arrested.
The gates were replaced.
The reserve was placed under independent supervision.
But for Anna, no arrest could bring her father back.
A few days later, she returned alone to the place where Daniel had once saved the lion.
The animal appeared in the distance.
It did not come closer.
It simply stood among the trees.
Anna placed the old glove on a stone.
— Thank you for bringing him home, she whispered.
The lion slowly lowered its head before disappearing into the forest.
Daniel had devoted his life to protecting animals that could not speak before humans.
